ICA INFORMATION

The city of Ica (400m above sea level) is famous because of its campiñas and its high quality of wine and Pisco. It is crib of the pre-Columbian cultures; Nazca and Paracas. Ica comes from a word in Quechua that means “water that emanates the ground” due to its immense deserts. This city was founded on 1563 by Don Luis Jeronimo de Cabrera but it is in 1633 that was recognized as a city.

Altitude: Ica is at 4000m above sea level.
Extension: Ica has an area of 21,337,83km2.
Population: It has a population of 712,938 habitants according to the last census
Provinces: Ica has 5 provinces; Pisco, Chincha, Ica, Palpa and Nazca. Ica is known as “city of eternal sun”.
Resources:
The agriculture is its main activity, especially the cotton and the products like beans (lima bean, bean and chickpea) and the grapevine; base of the industry of winegrowing of the zone. Our traditional beverage comes from Pisco. Currently, asparagus and pecans are cultivated to be exported, these products have made Ica the first worldwide exporter. As well, its mine in Mancora, the only one in the country from which iron is exported, and its fields which are the most important of the pacific coast. There is a steelmaking factory (where metal is melted) in the province of Pisco and in Paracas there are more than 7 companies of fish flour.
Economic Development:
The development of Ica is based in 4 sectors:
Agriculture, Mining, Fishing and Tourism, sectors of great importance that creates foreign currency in the region and the country, these are operated by the regional government through the private investment agency.
Agro-Industry:
Ica has an optimum weather to cultivate grapes and other fruits. Therefore, the geography for grape growing and Pisco is the most important in our country; not only for fine winegrowing, but as well for the elaboration of our national beverage Pisco, in all the varieties of grapes like Quebranta, Italia, Torontel and Negra Molar among others as well as fine seeds of high quality like, Tempranill, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tanac, Petit Verdot, among others, these surprise national and international consumers; as well to foreign markets due to our Pisco and wine of high quality.
Tourism:
Ica has many interesting places for tourism, starting with Chincha province and ending in Marcona, which is in Nazca. It has many archeological places, paleontological, historical, ecotourism and adventure tourism, which is currently being developed with a great acceptance in the local market. This enriching tourism is also known for its variety of gastronomy and special sweets, done in an artisan way, some examples are: strained sweet beans, pecans, sweet potato pudding and others. Ica has the biggest denomination of origin in the Pisco production. Its traditional beverage is considered as the second city in Peru, mostly visited among national and foreign visitors. Its main traditional resources are: cotton, vineyards, olive, lima bean and beans but what they mainly produce is iron.
Weather:
Ica has a warm and very dry weather, its average temperature is 20°C, different to the weather in the central coast like Lima. Ica’s weather is sunny even in the months of winter, but, the winter night is colder and the weather can even drop to 7°C. Summer time is warm and dry going up to 38°C.
Transportation:
Ica is located in the Panamerica Sur, it crosses between the five provinces like Chincha, Pisco, Ica, Palca and Nazca. The road infrastructure is in good condition, as a matter of fact, the last refurbishment was done in 2008. From the province of Pisco, San Clemente, there is a road named Los Libertadores which connects with the central and south mountains of Peru. It is in good condition counting with visible road signs. Ica counts with an important aerial infrastructure and the project of building an airport in the near future in the province of Pisco and airfields in Pisco and Nazca.
